The academic criterion of civil engineering is divided in three courses/programmes as follows:

  1. Diploma courses leading to the polytechnic diploma of 3 years duration.
  2. UG courses leading to the B.Tech (Bachelor of Technology) degree of 4 years duration.
  3. PG courses leading to the M.Tech (Master of Technology) degree of 2 years duration.

Beside these, it is one of the broad research fields leading to the PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) degree.

Some other courses of Civil Engineering are listed below:

Diploma Courses:

For this certification process, you will have to comply a range of conditions including mandatory exam and work experience before being certified. Then you will be designated as the Professional Engineer (USA, Canada & SA), a Chartered Engineer (Commonwealth Countries), and European Engineers (European Countries).

To get admission in civil engineering courses, you are needed to qualify the JEE Main (national level exam). Other state and university level exams are also organized for providing admissions.

Some good colleges to pursue civil engineering are given here:

  • Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay
  • Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur
  • Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi
  • National Institute of Technology (NIT), Trichy
  • National Institute of Technology (NIT), Surathkal

PSU : If you are technically strong, you can apply for PSU's. Nowadays they are mainly dependent on GATE score. So, prepare hard for GATE. Give your best shot.

Some Government departments like Department of Atomic energy etc conduct their own exams for recruitment. Follow their advertisements.

MBA or Construction /Project management etc in India -

You can as well attempt CAT with your engineering degree. If you are fortunate enough, you may get into some IIM.

If you wish to shift to management after Civil engineering, You can as well give a thought on Construction Management/Project Management programmes offered all over India.

You get a white collar job with a decent pay after completion of these programmes.

Some colleges are listed below where you can pursue Construction/Project Management.

Construction Technology and Management course -IIT Delhi

Construction Technology and Management course -IIT Delhi gives more weight on Technical Aspects of Construction.

National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE) - Mumbai

National Institute of Industrial Engineering is one of the top B-Schools in India, located in Powai near Vihar Lake in Mumbai, India.

It offers several programmes like:

Post Graduate Diploma in PROJECT MANAGEMENT(PGDPM)

Post Graduate Diploma in Industrial Safety and Environmental Management (PGDISEM)

Post Graduate Diploma in Industrial Management (PGDIM)

These Courses are accredited as MBA equivalent by UGC (University Grants Commission)

National Institute of Construction Management and Research

Programmes offered from Pune, Hyderabad, Goa and Indore. Visit their website for more details.

NICMAR gives more weight on Managerial aspects of Construction.

(Costliest option of all :D )

RICS School of Built Environment, Amity University (UGC Approved)

Set up in early 2013 as an industry led initiative, it is supported by leading employers & Ministry of Urban Development.

It offers several programmes like:

MBA in Real Estate and Urban Infrastructure,

MBA in Construction Project Management,

This institute provides Post Graduate Diploma in some courses (AICTE approved)

For more details, visit GICMAR (Global Institute of Construction Management and Research)

Maharashtra Institute of Technology - Pune

This institute provides Post Graduation Diploma in Project & Construction Management.

All are equally good from career point of view.

Some institutes offer Computer aided programmes for civil engineers. Civil engineers and architects are eligible for this course.

There are some more reputed institutions which offer similar courses.

7. Higher studies abroad : GRE, TOEFL, IELTS whatever.

8. If you are interested in City planning or town planning, there is an institute in Delhi (School of Planning and Architecture) which offers a post graduation degree in various disciplines. Even this is a good option.

9. You can even go for Law.

Prefer doing construction law. That will be more helpful if you wish to stay in Construction field.

You can as well do a full time course on Arbitration.

If you complete law (full time) after your civil engineering, you can represent any case in the court.

(Not all lawyers understand civil engineering terms. You can take advantage of that)

If you wish to go for Arbitration courses,

Search websites of good law colleges in India.

10. Interior designing is another alternative.

Here are some reputed firms which require the civil engineers whenever:

  • Emmar Properties
  • Marafiz Contracting
  • European Contracting
  • Ralls Contracting
  • Black Cat Eng
  • Sedrat Al Khaleej
  • Silver Falkon
  • Contromet
  • MedGulfPunj Lloyds Ltd
  • White Young
  • PCC
  • Shapoorji and Pallonji
  • Al Jadeed
  • Double Crown
  • Specialized Contracting
  • Unicon Development Constructions
  • PAC Constructions

In India, a student who has cleared the degree in civil engineering can get the offer of salary started from 5 lakh per annum upto 20+ lakh per annum.

In abroad the salary started from the $60000/annum to $100000/annum

Some ideas which come to mind -

  1. Automation of execution to achieve much faster turnaround times in construction projects. This is especially applicable to India where construction is painfully slow as compared to the west or even China ( I was amazed to know that construction of a huge structure like Millau Viaducttook only 3 years. In India, for such projects, often a year or more can pass even before the full site team and equipment are even mobilized).
  2. new material to replace concrete or steel or a new structural concept (like prestressing introduced in the past by Eugène Freyssinet) can cause a major disruption. But again, significant research is required. A lot of research is already going on in this field though, materials have come up but are not yet feasible to use at a massive scale (eg. Carbon-fiber-reinforced polymerFiber-reinforced concrete). Maybe you can look into some of them for inspiration or further development.
  3. Innovations in engineering and design space, finding new ways to design structures using the tremendous computation power and technology available. But unless what you do is truly revolutionary, what you will end up doing is only adding value to an already working product in an industry which does not care too much about value-engineering. You can develop tools for existing consultants, but scalability would be a problem there, the market of consultants is simply not large enough. But I believe there is room for a revolution here (don't take my word though, it is loaded with personal bias :) ).
  4. Here are some examples of startups
  5. 1.Residential and small constructions :one of the most well established business. You can start it near your locality at the beginning and later expand it.You must have a license from Municipal Corporation to draft plans.
  6. 2.Government Contracts: Construction of roads, govt. buildings, small culverts ,footpaths etc. However big projects are handled by big companies.Again a license is compulsory. It is the toughest business due to competition and political pressure.
  7. 3.Surveying agency: It is very simple but has very less demand.Bigger companies have their own and for small constructions the requirement is minimum.
  8. 4.Material testing Labs.:similar to surveying agency.
  9. 5.Concrete Factories :requires large investments
  10. 6. pre cast concrete: as of now the demand is very less but it is expected to grow.
  11. 7.Interior and exterior designing : Architects always have an upper hand but with some experience civil engineers can manage it too.
  12. 8. consultancies:Drafting plans, structural designing and estimating for medium constructions
  13. 9.Layout planning : the demand is growing.Just be in touch with real estate developers
